MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA
AASI welcomes institutions and organizations engaged in the governance, coordination, and development of maritime and intermodal transport in Africa.
Membership in AASI is open to any institution or organization involved in the governance and coordination of maritime and multimodal transport, as well as in the development of transport infrastructure. It is also open to international, sectoral, port, regional, or sub-regional organizations, as well as to training and research institutions operating in the fields of maritime transport, intermodality, infrastructure development in Africa, environment, and sustainable development, provided they operate or are established on the African continent.
Members must be:
- Members must be international or regional organizations, non-governmental organizations, public or private non-profit entities, port authorities, companies, law firms, experts, students, and institutions or initiatives working in support of maritime governance and coordination, provided they are duly constituted and registered, and operate, deploy their activities, or reside on the African continent.
- Individuals or initiatives may also be admitted, regardless of their place of registration or residence, provided they demonstrate a legitimate and good-faith interest in promoting Africans and in supporting the development, strengthening, and repositioning of Africa in international trade.
Admission of members remains subject to verification of their compliance with these criteria, in accordance with the procedures defined by the organization’s competent bodies.
Admission as a Member:
- Applications are reviewed by the Secretary General, who admits new members in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution and the directives of the Board of Directors.
- Membership requests are submitted through the online application form.

- Members are required to pay an annual fee, the initial amount of which is set by the Board of Directors following consultation with the stakeholders involved in the preparatory work of the Constitution.
- The fee is reviewed every two years by the Board of Directors and may be adjusted after consultation with the General Assemb
Members who do not pay their annual membership fee within the required timeframe are removed from the list of members. They may, however, be readmitted subject to payment of the fee due for the current year as well as any outstanding arrears that led to their removal, and following approval by the Board of Directors.
Any application for membership constitutes full and unconditional acceptance of the obligations arising therefrom.

Membership may be suspended by the Board of Directors if, at its sole discretion, it determines that a member no longer meets the eligibility criteria or no longer supports the objectives of the AASI. The suspension decision shall specify its duration as well as the conditions to be fulfilled for any potential readmission.
Any member may terminate their membership by written notice, including by email, addressed to the Secretary General. The termination takes effect on the date of receipt of the notification by the Secretariat, and any fees already paid are non-refundable.
